MP Janaksingh Dhami of the National Independent Party (RSP) has revealed that goods are being sold in the Kathmandu Valley at exorbitant prices, with some items weighing 800 grams being sold as 1 kilogram.
During a meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Dhami stated that an investigation into the prices of over 150 different types of goods in various cities, including Kathmandu, found that many products did not meet the advertised quality standards.
'We found that the quality of the goods did not match the advertisements. This was especially prevalent in online trade. While 1 kilogram should weigh 1000 grams, we found that in some places in the Kathmandu Valley, goods weighing only 800 grams were being sold as 1 kilogram,' Dhami said.
Dhami also complained about the artificial scarcity of goods, which is leading to higher prices. 'We found that some businesses were charging exorbitant prices for low-quality goods. This is against social norms and values,' he said.
Dhami emphasized that the irregularities in the market system are affecting the daily lives of people from all walks of life and questioned why the authorities are failing to protect consumers' rights. 'I request the Speaker of the House to urge the concerned authorities to address these issues immediately,' he said.
