US President Donald Trump has made a significant announcement regarding the import of generic medicines.
He stated that starting from Ashar 29, 2083, these medicines will have a zero percent tariff.
However, he mentioned that the tariff will be increased after one year.
President Trump made the announcement on social media on Wednesday morning.
He wrote, ‘From August 1, 2026, all generic medicines imported to the US will have a zero percent tariff for a period of two years. After that, the tariff will be increased to 100 percent for a year and then to 200 percent.’
Boosting Domestic Production
He stated that this move aims to bring the production of generic medicines to the US.
Companies that fail to set up factories and necessary equipment to manufacture medicines in the US within the stipulated time will be penalized.
President Trump emphasized that the goal of this policy is to ensure the safety of the American people.
The policy for patented, branded, or new medicines, which has been successful, will continue.
Factories to manufacture medicines are being set up across the US on a massive scale, more than ever before.
