A task force formed to address human-wildlife conflict in Nepal has submitted an interim report to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests, and Environment.
The report, presented to Minister Gita Chaudhary, contains suggestions for reducing damage caused by wild animals, including monkeys, improving the compensation system, raising public awareness, and long-term management.
Minister Chaudhary expressed her commitment to addressing the issue, stating that the ministry will study the suggestions and make necessary policy decisions, legal reforms, and effective implementations to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
Monkey Menace in Nepal
Minister Chaudhary specifically highlighted the serious problem faced by farmers in various districts of Nepal due to monkey attacks, which has resulted in crop destruction, displacement of farmers, and a direct impact on agricultural production.
She emphasized that the issue should be treated as a national problem, linked to the livelihood of farmers and food security, rather than just a wildlife conservation issue.
The minister also directed the task force to prepare a clear action plan, incorporating scientific, legal, and practical measures for monkey management.
She further instructed the task force to study the actual situation in the affected areas, coordinate with local governments, concerned agencies, experts, and the community, and come up with implementable solutions.
