Dr. Govind Keshi, a medical education reform activist, has announced that he will resume his hunger strike on Ashar 29, 2083, citing the government’s failure to address his demands.
Dr. Keshi, who has been leading a movement to reform medical education in Nepal, accused the government of ignoring his demands and allowing private medical colleges to operate without proper regulations.
He alleged that the government has been influenced by private medical mafia and has failed to implement the National Medical Education Act, 2075, which requires medical education to be non-profit.
Dr. Keshi also criticized the government’s decision to reduce the number of scholarships for medical students and increase the number of paid seats in private colleges, which he said would lead to a shortage of doctors in government hospitals.
He also questioned the appointment process of the vice-chairman of the Medical Education Commission, alleging that it was done without following proper procedures.
Dr. Keshi also raised concerns about the establishment of a new medical university in Geta, which he said was done without proper planning and was influenced by private interests.
He demanded that the government cancel the appointments made under the influence of private interests, reverse the decision to reduce scholarships and increase paid seats in private colleges, and implement the law to make medical education non-profit.
Dr. Keshi also demanded that the government provide basic services such as health, education, transportation, and employment to the people of Sudurpaschim and other border areas, and take action against those responsible for the violence and looting that took place in Bhadra 2082.
He said that he had given the government a deadline of Ashar 5 to address his demands, but since there was no response, he was forced to resume his hunger strike.
Dr. Keshi said that the government would be responsible for any consequences that may arise from his hunger strike.
