22 Rhinos Die in Chitwan in a Year

Twenty-two rhinos have died in Chitwan National Park and the surrounding national forest area in the past year.

According to park officials, 20 rhinos died in the national park area, while two died in the national forest area, up to the end of Ashar, 2083.

Two of the rhinos died after being electrocuted, while the others died from natural causes, said Avinash Thapa Magar, information officer at the park.

One of the electrocuted rhinos was found dead near the Lokaha river in Madi, Chitwan, while the other was found in the national forest area in Nawalparasi.

Other rhinos died after getting stuck in the mud, fighting, being eaten by tigers, or due to old age, Thapa Magar said.

In the previous fiscal year 2081/82, 30 rhinos died from natural causes, including two in the national forest area.

Rhino Population

According to the 2021 census, there were 694 adult rhinos in Chitwan National Park.
