Lalitpur Metropolitan City has introduced a ‘Smart Safety Barricade’ in Jawalakhel to enhance pedestrian safety.

According to the metropolis, this system, which is being implemented experimentally for the first time in Nepal, is expected to contribute to the reduction of road accidents by effectively enforcing traffic rules.

The Smart Safety Barricade, which will be operated in coordination with the traffic lights, will encourage pedestrians to use the zebra crossing only at the designated time, said Sitaram Hachethu, head of the metropolis’s city police.

The barricade is equipped with a sensor system that will not close when pedestrians are in the middle of crossing, ensuring their safe passage and reducing the risk of accidents.

The metropolis has also prepared to place flower pots on either side of the road to prevent pedestrians from crossing the road from places other than the zebra crossing.

Chief of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiribabu Maharjan, mentioned that in the past, the lack of proper use of zebra crossings and disregard for traffic rules had led to an increase in pedestrian accidents, and the Smart Safety Barricade is expected to create a safe and organized road environment for both pedestrians and drivers.

The Smart Safety Barricade has been installed at two locations in Jawalakhel on a trial basis, and if successful, it will be expanded to all intersections with traffic lights within the metropolis.
