Prime Minister Balen Shah is holding talks with tea industrialists today to discuss the problems they are facing and possible solutions.
A meeting between the Prime Minister and tea industrialists is underway, where they will discuss the issues affecting the tea industry, according to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Shah met with representatives of the Handicrafts Association. Prior to that, he had met with representatives of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, the Construction Entrepreneurs Association, the Footwear Association, and the Share Investors Association, among others.
However, the Finance Minister and other relevant ministers were not involved in these discussions.
Today, the Prime Minister has invited the presidents and representatives of the Organic Association of Nepal, Gorkha Tea Estate, Himalayan Sangrila Tea Industry, and Annapurna Organic Agro Industry, among others, for talks.
Nepal’s tea industry has been affected by Indian policies, customs procedures, and market conditions, as most of Nepal’s tea is exported to third countries via India. Recently, Nepal’s tea exports were disrupted for two months due to India’s new quality testing system, resulting in the closure of dozens of tea factories in Ilam and Jhapa.
This has also affected the livelihoods of workers dependent on the tea industry. Today’s meeting with the Prime Minister is expected to discuss this issue as well.
