Nagendra Raj Sharma: A Legacy of Literature

Nagendra Raj Sharma, a renowned Nepali writer and editor, passed away on Ashar 31, 2083. The news of his demise was met with an outpouring of grief from the literary community, but it was not entirely unexpected, given his deteriorating health in recent months.

My first encounter with Nagendra Dai was at a literary event in New Road, Pipalbot, in the 1980s. I was an aspiring writer at the time, and he had just launched his magazine, Abhiyakti. I was impressed by his dedication to promoting Nepali literature and his passion for discovering new talent.

Over the years, I had the privilege of working with Nagendra Dai on various projects, including a column on Abhiyakti. He was a mentor, a guide, and a friend, who encouraged me to pursue my writing dreams. His magazine became a platform for many young writers, including myself, to showcase our work.

Nagendra Dai’s own writing career spanned several decades, during which he penned two novels, ‘Mahapurush’ and ‘Diva Swapna’, both published in the late 1970s. He had started working on a third novel, but unfortunately, it remained incomplete.

One of my fondest memories of Nagendra Dai is of our conversations about literature and writing. He would often share his insights and experiences, and I would listen with rapt attention. His love for Nepali literature was infectious, and he inspired a whole generation of writers to explore their creative potential.

Although his health had been declining, Nagendra Dai remained committed to his work until the end. His legacy will live on through the countless writers he mentored, the magazine he founded, and the literature he created.
