A tax official in Nepal has been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of 500,000 rupees (approximately $4,200 USD) from a local business.

Yuvraj Pal, a tax official at the Inland Revenue Office in Lahan, Siraha, was caught red-handed by a team from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Wednesday.

According to sources, Pal had demanded the bribe from the Siraha Super Market in exchange for completing a tax audit for the fiscal year 2078/79. The company had been asked to pay around 2 million rupees in taxes, penalties, and other charges.

However, Pal allegedly offered to settle the matter for 1.2 million rupees, and later reduced the amount to 500,000 rupees, claiming that he would resolve all issues if the payment was made.

The CIAA team had been monitoring Pal’s activities and caught him while he was accepting the bribe at his office. The incident is currently under investigation.

Ram Bahadur Kurumwang, chief of the CIAA’s Bardibas office, confirmed the arrest and said that further investigation is underway.
