Egg Prices Rise in Nepal Due to Bird Flu

Egg prices have increased in Nepal due to the impact of bird flu, which has led to a decrease in production and an increase in demand.

The Nepal Layers Chicken Farmers Association sets market prices based on the prices of large farms. According to the association, the price of large eggs (30 pieces per crate) has increased from Rs 450 to Rs 500, effective from today. The price of medium eggs has increased from Rs 420 to Rs 470, while the price of small eggs has reached Rs 415. The price of all eggs has increased by Rs 50 per crate.

Vinod Pokharel, the central president of the Nepal Layers Chicken Farmers Association, stated that the price increase is due to the rise in demand for eggs. Daily egg production has decreased from 4.5 million to 2.8 million due to bird flu.

In the last week of Jestha, the price of eggs had dropped to Rs 450 per crate from Rs 550. The cost price of one crate of eggs is Rs 573.60, with each egg costing Rs 19.12. Pokharel stated that the price increase is due to the rise in egg consumption.

Although the price has increased, farmers are still not getting the cost price. Pokharel expressed hope that farmers will soon receive the cost price.

Pokharel also stated that farmers have suffered significant losses due to bird flu and that the government should provide relief to affected farmers.
