Chitwan. Chitwan National Park has fitted a wild elephant named ‘Dhruve’ with a radio collar. The elephant, which has claimed the lives of 25 people in the park and surrounding areas, was darted and fitted with a satellite radio collar around its neck.
According to Avinash Thapa Magar, information officer at the park, the elephant was darted and a satellite radio collar was fitted around its neck. It was then released after being tranquilized. The radio collar will provide information on the elephant’s status in a short period and its activities can be monitored through GPS tracking.
A team consisting of the Nepal Army’s New Gorkha Battalion, technical staff of the park, and technical staff of the National Trust for Nature Conservation fitted the radio collar on the elephant.
The park had increased its search and surveillance efforts after the same elephant attacked and killed 25-year-old Ashika Bote and her four-year-old son Bharat Bote in Bharatpur-23 on Ashar 20, 2083. The park stated that it took time to control the elephant due to unfavorable weather and dense foliage.
The park has urged local residents to be vigilant, follow the instructions issued, and inform the relevant authorities immediately if they spot the wild elephant.
