Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is set to form a new government in Karnali Province following a national agreement between NCP and CPN (UML) on Saturday.

The agreement, signed by CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli and NCP Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has affected the previous power equation in the province.

The Karnali Province government, led by Chief Minister Yamlal Kandel, had been reduced to a minority after the Nepali Congress withdrew its support on Ashar 31. A no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Kandel was registered in the Provincial Assembly on Ashar 32.

The Nepali Congress had proposed forming a new government under the leadership of NCP with the support of 11 NCP and 5 Congress Provincial Assembly members. However, the motion was not tabled as Chief Minister Kandel resigned from his post on Saturday.

Following Chief Minister Kandel’s resignation, the door for a new government has been opened. The Speaker of the Provincial Assembly, Nanda Gurung, has announced that the next meeting of the Provincial Assembly will be held on Shrawan 14 at 3:00 pm.
