The Kankadbhitta-Laukahi road expansion project, which falls under the Eastern Highway, has gained momentum in recent times.
The project, which is being implemented with a loan of Rs 46 billion from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has seen rapid progress in the eastern section, where blacktopping work is underway.
Project Details
The 95-kilometer-long road has been divided into five packages, with the project being implemented in two sections – eastern and western. The eastern section spans from Kankadbhitta to Sitapuri in Jhapa, covering a distance of 45 kilometers, while the western section stretches from Sitapuri to Labipur in Sunsari, covering a distance of 50 kilometers.
According to the latest project details, the physical progress of the first package (Kankadbhitta-Sitapuri) has reached 47 percent, while the second package (Sitapuri-Gothgau) has seen a progress of 42 percent, and the third package (Gothgau-Labipur) has achieved a physical progress of 19 percent.
Sunil Babu Pant, chief of the Kankadbhitta-Laukahi Road Project (Eastern Section), said that so far, the first layer of blacktopping has been completed on 16.5 kilometers of road in the eastern section. The project aims to complete 400 to 800 meters of blacktopping daily, with a target of completing around seven kilometers of road blacktopping in a week.
Pant added that the project plans to complete an additional 15 kilometers of road blacktopping by Dashain, with sufficient bitumen stock available. Despite some disruptions due to the monsoon season, the project has maintained its continuity.
The Kankadbhitta-Laukahi road project, which began in Magh 2080 BS, aims to be completed by Magh 18, 2083 BS. The project has also started constructing a three-meter-wide divider in the middle of the road, with road expansion work underway on both sides.
