The water level in the Saptakoshi River has started to rise with the onset of the monsoon season.
According to Chandrabahadur Khadka, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sunsari, the water flow at the Koshi Barrage reached 163,230 cusecs on Wednesday evening.
As the monsoon continues, the water flow in the river is expected to increase further.
Risk of Flooding and Erosion
The Saptakoshi River is known to swell during the monsoon season, causing flooding and erosion in the surrounding areas.
The river’s water level rises significantly during the months of Ashar, Shrawan, and Bhadra, due to heavy rainfall in the eastern hills and plains.
The Saptakoshi River is formed by the confluence of several rivers, including the Tamor, Arun, Sun Koshi, Dudh Koshi, Tama Koshi, Bhote Koshi, and Indrawati.
During the dry season, the river’s bed is visible in many places, but during the monsoon, the river swells and overflows its banks.
The Koshi Barrage has 56 gates, out of which 21 are currently open.
The barrage’s control room has warned that if the water flow exceeds 150,000 cusecs, a red flag will be hoisted and a red light will be displayed as a warning sign.
