A large collection of ancient coins has been discovered in Kapilvastu, a municipality in western Nepal.

The coins, found in a copper vessel, were unearthed by a local farmer, Rajaram Yadav, while working in his field in Bhabani, Kapilvastu Municipality-5.

After being informed by the locals, a team of local representatives, police, and officials from the Kapilvastu Museum collected the ancient artifacts.

Ancient Coins

The copper vessel, containing over 2,000 ancient coins, has been taken to the Kapilvastu Museum for safekeeping.

According to Shanti Shrestha, chief of the Kapilvastu Museum, the coins are believed to date back to the 12th or 13th century.

‘The artifacts are estimated to be from the 12th or 13th century (medieval period),’ she said.

Shrestha added that the process of extracting the coins from the vessel is ongoing.

So far, 2,314 copper coins with Arabic inscriptions have been found inside the vessel, which is approximately 23 centimeters tall.
