Dr Govinda KC, a crusading doctor from Nepal, has embarked on his 24th hunger strike, demanding reforms in the country’s medical education system. His fight, which began in 2006, has led to significant changes, including the establishment of the National Medical Education Act in 2018.
Despite his efforts, many of his demands remain unfulfilled. Dr KC’s current hunger strike, which started in Dhangadhi, is focused on the implementation of the National Medical Education Act and the removal of controversial provisions. He is also demanding the cancellation of appointments made to the Medical Education Commission and the Dharan-based Dharan Medical University, citing conflicts of interest.
Dr KC’s crusade has been marked by numerous hunger strikes, protests, and negotiations with the government. His demands have included the allocation of at least 75% of seats in government medical colleges as free scholarships, the implementation of a merit-based admission system, and the regulation of private medical colleges.
One of his key demands is the implementation of the National Medical Education Act, which aims to transform all medical teaching institutions into non-profit and service-oriented institutions within 10 years. However, the government has yet to take concrete steps towards implementing this provision.
Dr KC’s hunger strike has also highlighted the need for basic services, including healthcare, education, transportation, and employment, in the country’s remote and border regions. He is demanding that the government take immediate action to address these issues.
Furthermore, Dr KC is seeking action against those responsible for the violence, arson, and looting that took place on August 23 and 24, 2082 BS, as well as a fair investigation into corruption and other crimes committed by high-ranking politicians and officials since 2046 BS.
Dr KC’s fight for medical education reform has been ongoing for over 14 years, with numerous twists and turns. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to his cause, inspiring many with his determination and perseverance.
