Bangladesh is set to elect a new president in September, according to the country’s law minister, Anisul Huq.

The election will take place within 90 days of the president’s resignation, as stipulated in the constitution. The current president, Mohammad Shahabuddin, resigned recently due to illness.

Constitutional Process

According to the constitution, the speaker of the parliament, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, has taken over as the acting president. The parliament secretariat confirmed that the speaker has started performing the duties of the president.

The press secretary to the president, Mohammad Sarwar Alam, said that the president had submitted his resignation letter to the speaker due to his illness.

Election Process

Members of parliament will vote to elect the new president. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, has a majority in the parliament, and it is widely expected that the party’s candidate will be elected as the next president.

The law minister said that the third session of the parliament will be called within two months, by September 14, and the election will take place during that session.
