The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) has decided to draft a proposal for constitutional amendment based on the suggestions it has received.
The party’s subcommittee on constitutional amendment, led by Agni Prasad Kharel, held a meeting at the party’s central office in Kathmandu on Wednesday to discuss the proposal.
According to Mahesh Bartaula, a member-secretary of the subcommittee, the meeting decided to categorize the suggestions received for constitutional amendment and prepare a proposal based on facts, logic, and relevance.
The meeting also discussed the implementation of the constitution so far, its achievements, and the practical challenges faced, Bartaula said.
The subcommittee also discussed identifying the necessary areas for constitutional amendment and studying them from political, constitutional, administrative, and legal perspectives.
Bartaula said the meeting also discussed the methods and procedures for collecting suggestions from political parties, constitutional bodies, subject matter experts, lawyers, administrative sectors, civil society, and stakeholders.
Those present at the meeting included subcommittee chairman Kharel, member-secretary Bartaula, Ramesh Badal, Tikaram Bhattarai, Rajendra Ghimire, Amar Thapa, and former law minister Madhav Prasad Paudel.
Bartaula said the party is collecting suggestions for constitutional amendment to strengthen the federal democratic republic and the system of governance adopted by the current constitution.
