Nepal University Row: Government Team to Hold Decisive Talks with Dr. Govinda KC

A government team is set to hold decisive talks with Dr. Govinda KC, a professor who has been on a hunger strike since Thursday, demanding the removal of self-serving officials from the Martyr Dashrath Chand Health Science University.

The talks, which will resume on Sunday morning, are expected to focus on finding a solution to the dispute over the appointment of officials at the university.

Key Demands

Dr. KC has put forward five key demands, including the removal of self-serving officials from the university, the cancellation of a decision to increase the number of seats at private medical colleges, and the amendment of the Medical Education Act to make medical education non-profitable.

He has also demanded that the government take action against those responsible for the recent violence and vandalism in the region, and that it investigate and take action against high-ranking politicians and officials accused of corruption and crime.

Previous Talks

Previous talks between the government team and Dr. KC’s representatives on Saturday failed to reach a conclusion due to some technical issues.

According to sources, the government team is willing to remove the registrar of the university, Dr. Bhim Bahadur Chand, but is still discussing the fate of the vice-chancellor, Dr. Sunil Prasad Joshi.

The government team is also considering options to ensure the smooth operation of the university, including giving continuity to the current officials for some time or amending the law to remove the provision that allows self-serving appointments.

Dr. KC’s Condition

Dr. KC, who has been on a hunger strike since Thursday, was taken to the Seti Provincial Hospital on Saturday and is currently being treated in the ICU.

His condition is reported to be stable, but his supporters are worried about his health and are urging the government to take immediate action to address his demands.
