Nepal to Set Service Fee for Migrant Workers Amid Concerns Over Excessive Charges

Nepal’s government is preparing to set a service fee for migrant workers, a move that has been welcomed by manpower agencies but has raised concerns among labor experts.

The Ministry of Youth, Labor, and Employment has formed a study committee to determine the service fee, which is expected to be finalized soon.

Manpower agencies have been demanding a review of the existing service fee of Rs 10,000, citing that it is not enough to cover their operational costs.

However, labor experts have questioned the basis for setting a new service fee, pointing out that the existing fee has not been effectively implemented.

Ramshwar Nepal, a labor and migration expert, said that the problem lies not in the amount of the service fee but in its implementation.

‘The existing law has not been effectively implemented, and the new law will not solve the problem either,’ he said.

Nepal pointed out that even if the government sets a new service fee, manpower agencies may still find ways to charge migrant workers extra fees.

He suggested that the government should focus on implementing the existing law effectively rather than setting a new service fee.
