Nepal has seen a significant increase in the number of Demat (Beneficiary) account holders, reaching 7.7 million as of the end of the fiscal year 2077/78. This represents 26% of the country’s total population.
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has reported that the number of Demat account holders has increased, with the majority being opened in the Bagmati Province, accounting for 34.13% of the total. The Karnali Province has the lowest number of Demat account holders, with only 2.98%.
According to the Nepal Capital Market Development Strategy, 2083, the number of investors opening Demat accounts has also increased. As of the end of the fiscal year 2077/78, the number of investors opening Demat accounts was 7 million. However, in the current fiscal year, 6.7 million investors have opened Demat accounts, representing 23% of the total population.
Trading Management System (TMS) Accounts
The number of investors opening Trading Management System (TMS) accounts has also increased. TMS accounts are required for investors to trade in the secondary market. As of the end of the fiscal year 2077/78, only 35,000 investors had opened TMS accounts. However, as of the end of Jestha, 2083, the number of TMS account holders has increased to 3.4 million.
The government’s revenue from capital gains tax on share transactions has also increased. In the fiscal year 2077/78, the government collected Rs 15.54 billion in revenue from capital gains tax. In the current fiscal year, the government has collected Rs 10.7 billion in revenue from capital gains tax.
Nepal’s Capital Market Development
Nepal’s capital market has seen significant growth over the past three decades. As of 2026, 297 companies are listed on the Nepal Stock Exchange Limited, with a market capitalization of Rs 465.6 billion, representing 70.52% of the country’s GDP.
