Nepal rapper Sakar Adhikari has announced a change to his stage name. In a brief statement, he revealed that he is dropping the name ‘Lil Buddha’, which he has been known by until now.
Sakar stated that he wants to be recognized by his real name in the music industry. He cited two reasons for the name change on social media.
Firstly, he expressed concern that the word ‘Buddha’ may create unnecessary confusion with religion and spirituality when he performs internationally. Secondly, he mentioned that he has faced criticism for allegedly misusing the name of late rapper Yama Buddha.
Regarding the second reason, Sakar said, ‘Many people have said that I misused Yama Buddha’s name. My intention was always to respect and carry forward his legacy.’ He believes that this change will respectfully close that chapter.
Sakar now wants to move forward with his music, as well as explore other creative fields like art and design. ‘The name Lil Buddha is closely tied to my rapper image,’ he said, ‘but I want to break out of that mold and create a bigger and more diverse identity.’
Sakar confirmed that ‘Lil Buddha’ will no longer be his official stage name. ‘The biggest projects of my career are coming soon,’ he wrote, ‘and the most exciting chapter of our journey begins today. From now on, it’s Sakar.’
