Nepal Launches Nationwide Inspection of Land Holdings Beyond Ceiling Limit

The Department of Land Management and Archive has directed all relevant land administration offices across the country to conduct on-site inspections and monitoring of companies, industries, institutions, and organizations that have obtained approval from the Government of Nepal to purchase or hold land beyond the ceiling limit.

The department issued a letter on Wednesday to 40 district land administration offices, stating that despite repeated requests for reports, most offices have failed to submit them. The department has instructed the offices to form an inspection team to conduct on-site visits and submit a report.

Legal Provision for Regular Monitoring

According to the Land Act, institutions that have obtained approval to hold land beyond the ceiling limit are required to use the land for the approved purpose. The law also stipulates that the relevant committee is responsible for regular monitoring and inspection of such institutions.

The law requires the committee to inspect the actual use of the land within two months of the end of the fiscal year and submit a report to the department in coordination with the local level.

Directive to Expedite Inspection

The department has directed the land administration offices to expedite the inspection process without delay, to conduct on-site visits, and to submit a report with clear details on whether the land is being used for the approved purpose.
