The Nepal Electricity Authority has decided to provide compensation of 15,71,250 rupees to a boy who was seriously injured after coming into contact with a live wire from a transmission line.
The authority’s board of directors has approved the compensation, which includes medical expenses and other costs.
The incident occurred when the boy, who was playing on the roof of a building in Triveni Municipality-2, Ghusheri, Nawalparasi (Susta East), came into contact with a live wire from an 11 kV transmission line.
Compensation and Medical Expenses
The approved amount will be distributed to the victim’s family through the concerned distribution centre.
The authority has been providing compensation and medical expenses as per the Accident Compensation Regulations, 2067, under Rule 11, Sub-Rule 1.
According to the regulations, compensation up to 200,000 rupees and medical expenses are borne by the departmental head, while compensation between 200,000 to 500,000 rupees is borne by the concerned deputy executive director.
Compensation between 500,000 to 1,000,000 rupees is borne by the chief administrative officer, and amounts exceeding 1,000,000 rupees are decided by the board of directors.
Minister’s Statement
Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Viraj Bhatt Shrestha stated that the compensation was provided based on legal provisions and past precedents.
He said that no amount of money can compensate for human life, but the provided amount can help in the victim’s livelihood.
‘This amount cannot erase the pain, but it can provide some support in their livelihood,’ Minister Shrestha said.
He also emphasized the need for the authority and civil society to be aware of the increasing number of electrical accidents and take necessary measures to reduce them.
Minister Shrestha directed the authority to repair its structures, increase surveillance in high-risk areas, enhance safety precautions, and intensify public awareness and prior information campaigns.
He also stressed the importance of public awareness in reducing electrical accidents.
