A security breach at NBC’s TODAY show on Thursday morning led to a man being arrested after he allegedly lunged at host Craig Melvin and used a racial slur.
According to law enforcement sources, the man, who is white and unarmed, had managed to slip past security and enter the building from the plaza. He was initially looking for Al Roker, but when he could not find him, he turned his attention to Mr Melvin in a restricted area.
The incident occurred around 9 AM ET, and staff and security quickly intervened, detaining and arresting the intruder. The man had made his way backstage, near the dressing rooms, before being stopped.
Despite the frightening encounter, no one was hurt. The incident did not disrupt the live broadcast, and roughly 15 minutes later, both Mr Melvin and Mr Roker were on air, with neither mentioning the drama that had unfolded.
The incident has raised concerns among staff about the security measures in place, particularly how an unauthorized person was able to gain access to the building and get so close to one of the show’s hosts.
