Kathmandu Metropolitan City has initiated a technical study to identify the root cause of the recurring flooding in the Maitighar Mandala area and find a long-term solution.

The city has instructed the concerned agencies to conduct a technical study and submit a report with recommendations for a permanent solution.

Causes of Flooding

During a site visit, officials from the concerned agencies pointed out the weaknesses in the existing drainage structure in the area as the primary cause of the flooding.

According to the Division Road Office, the main drainage pipe in the area has a diameter of 90 centimeters, but the pipe at the water outlet is only 60 centimeters in diameter, which has affected the flow of water.

Officials who participated in the site visit emphasized the need to study the impact of construction activities in the surrounding areas on the drainage system.

Plans to Address the Issue

The city has planned to identify and remove obstacles in the drainage path and work in coordination with the concerned government agencies to make the Maitighar area flood-free.

Acting Chief Sunita Dangol expressed her commitment to improving the infrastructure to prevent such problems in the future.

The Maitighar area is one of the busiest and most sensitive areas in Kathmandu, and the flooding has had a direct impact on traffic, pedestrians, and businesses in the surrounding areas.
