A former military officer accused of involvement in the murder of Bangladesh’s former President Ziaur Rahman has been arrested after more than four decades on the run.
Mohammad Mozaffar Hossain was taken into custody by police in Dhaka on Thursday, according to the AFP news agency.
President Rahman was assassinated in 1981 during a military coup. Eighteen military officers were accused of involvement in his murder, and 13 have already been executed.
Hossain had been in hiding since the assassination and had fled the country. A reward of $2,000 had been offered for information leading to his capture.
According to police, Hossain had admitted his role in the assassination during initial questioning.
President Rahman’s son, Tariq Rahman, is currently the prime minister of Bangladesh.
Ziaur Rahman became president in 1977 after the assassination of Bangladesh’s founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. His presidency was marked by numerous coup attempts.
The circumstances of President Rahman’s assassination remain shrouded in mystery. He was killed while visiting the city of Chittagong to resolve a crisis within his newly formed political party.
