A high risk of flash flooding has been predicted in small rivers across various districts in Nepal, prompting the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology to urge nearby residents to exercise high caution.
According to the department, small rivers in Gorkha, Rupandehi, Arghakhanchi, Kapilvastu, and Dang districts are at risk of sudden flooding.
Additionally, the department has warned of potential flash flooding in small rivers in Jhapa, Morang, Ilam, Sunsari, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Kavrepalanchok, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Kaski, Tanahun, Syangja, Parbat, Baglung, Gulmi, Palpa, Nawalparasi (East), Nawalparasi (West), Pyuthan, Banke, Bardiya, Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Baitadi, and Darchula districts.
Binod Parajuli, a flood expert at the department, has urged residents in riverbank areas and nearby communities to be particularly cautious.
He said, ‘As the water flow in the rivers can increase suddenly, people should avoid crossing rivers, fishing, extracting river materials, sitting or moving along the riverbanks.’
The department has also requested local administrations, security agencies, and local governments to take necessary precautions and be prepared for potential flash flooding.
