China has introduced new regulations to address the growing emotional dependence on artificial intelligence (AI) companion bots and potential risks associated with their use.
The regulations, announced on Wednesday, aim to organize the rapidly expanding AI companion service industry, which has gained popularity for its human-like personality and communication skills in areas such as customer service, mental health support, childcare, and elderly care.
New Regulations
According to the new regulations, AI companion service providers must identify users’ emotional states, intervene in crisis situations, control excessive use, and ensure users have full control over their personal data.
Additionally, the regulations require providers to implement necessary security measures to prevent the misuse of users’ personal information.
The regulations define AI companion bots as technologies that provide continuous emotional interaction through text, images, audio, or video.
However, AI applications used for customer service, education, and scientific research are excluded from the regulations.
China’s AI Market Expansion
As the use of AI technology expands across various sectors, China’s AI market is also growing rapidly.
Recent research suggests that China’s AI market is expected to exceed 1.2 trillion yuan (approximately 177 billion USD) by 2025 and reach 1.8 trillion yuan by 2028.
