The Bharatpur Inland Revenue Office has collected Rs 26.83 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year.
This is an increase of Rs 1.74 billion compared to the previous fiscal year, when the office collected Rs 25.09 billion.
However, the office failed to meet its revenue target for the year. According to Punyavikram Khadka, chief of the office, the Inland Revenue Department had set a target of Rs 31.05 billion for the year.
The closure of a liquor industry in the area resulted in a significant loss of revenue. The industry had paid Rs 1 billion in revenue in the previous year.
Khadka attributed the failure to meet the revenue target to several factors, including the non-increase in excise duty on liquor, the removal of excise duty on certain plastic bottles, and a decrease in the consumption of Coca-Cola, which pays a higher excise duty.
He also mentioned that the government’s soft policy on full tax audits, which was announced on Bhadra 23, had also affected revenue collection. The policy had allowed for the suspension of audits for some cases.
Khadka said that the mindset of taxpayers that they would always get a tax exemption had also led to a decrease in revenue collection.
The office had conducted advance tax settlements with 49 taxpayers, monitored 197 markets, and organized tax education programs for 24 taxpayers. The tax education program had resulted in the collection of Rs 56.50 million in value-added tax, which is 198% of the target.
However, the office collected only Rs 5.41 million in income tax, which is just 13% of the target. The office had set a target of Rs 41 million for import tax, but only Rs 21.45 million was collected.
There are currently 74,000 taxpayers registered with the office. In addition to the office, six municipalities in the district also provide taxpayer services.
These municipalities, except for the Bharatpur Metropolitan City, provide services such as PAN number distribution, return amendment, registration cancellation, and value-added tax registration.
