A man who allegedly broke into the ‘TODAY’ show’s studios has been charged with hate crimes after he reportedly used a racial slur against a presenter.
Andrew Truelove, who has a history of run-ins with the law, was arrested on Thursday morning after he entered a restricted area of the building and approached presenter Craig Melvin.
According to police, Truelove told people that he had always wanted to use the N-word against a famous black person, and that he had achieved his goal when he directed the slur at Melvin.
Truelove allegedly followed an employee into the restricted area of the building, and then approached Melvin at the bottom of a stairwell, yelling out his name and asking for another presenter, Al Roker.
When Melvin asked Truelove if he wanted to get arrested for using the slur, Truelove replied that it was something he had always wanted to do, police said.
Truelove has been charged with hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment. NBC said that no one was injured in the incident.
Melvin addressed the incident on the air on Friday morning, saying that the alleged intruder had been apprehended quickly and that everyone at the ‘TODAY’ show was cooperating with the police.
