A total of 72 people lost their lives in road accidents in Dang district over the past year.
On 5 Chaitra, a 49-year-old woman, Pushpa Kandel, from Tulsipur-9, died after a tipper truck collided with the scooter she was riding on in Chamikhola, Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City-9.
Earlier, on 3 Chaitra, a 42-year-old man, Bhanu Rijal, from Gadhawa Rural Municipality-5, Banki village, also lost his life on the spot after being hit by a vehicle.
Investigations by the District Police Office found that both accidents were caused by speeding drivers.
Road Accidents on the Rise
These incidents are just examples of the increasing number of road accidents in the district. According to the Traffic Police Office, Dang, a total of 347 road accidents occurred in the district in the fiscal year 2082/83, resulting in the deaths of 72 people.
Among the deceased, 50 were men, 19 were women, and three were children. Traffic Police Office, Dang, Chief Police Inspector Keshav Khadka said that 163 men, 47 women, 16 boys, and six girls were seriously injured in these accidents.
Motorcycle accidents accounted for the majority of these incidents, with 281 cases reported.
According to the police, the main causes of these accidents were speeding, drunk driving, driver negligence, road conditions, and mechanical faults.
Efforts to Reduce Accidents
The police have been conducting public awareness campaigns and road safety programs to prevent such accidents and reduce their numbers.
Recently, the Traffic Police have also been conducting free health check-ups for drivers and pedestrians who jaywalk, as part of their awareness and safety campaign.
