116 Prisoners Transferred from Bharatpur Prison Due to Overcrowding

Due to overcrowding, 116 prisoners have been transferred from Bharatpur Prison in Chitwan to other prisons in the past year.

According to Chet Nath Dhungana, chief of the prison, the transfer was necessary as the number of prisoners exceeded the prison’s capacity. The prison has a capacity of 505 inmates, but currently, there are 717 prisoners, including 40 women and 677 men.

The transferred prisoners have been sent to various prisons, including Bhimphedi Prison, where 53 prisoners were transferred, 26 to Nuwakot, 17 to Kapilvastu, seven to Kaski, four to Syangja, and one each to Nakhhu, Lalitpur, and Nepalgunj.

The prison’s capacity is 505 inmates, with 30 women and 475 men. However, the current number of prisoners has exceeded the capacity, resulting in a shortage of space and difficulties in managing the prison.
