Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed the country’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrsky, from his post. The decision comes after widespread protests across the country following the recent dismissal of popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Syrsky’s departure has been seen as a significant development, with some speculating that his removal was due to disagreements with Fedorov. The BBC has reported that Syrsky’s ousting is a major blow to the old guard.
New Commander Appointed
In a surprise move, 43-year-old General Mykhailo Drapei has been appointed as the new commander-in-chief. Drapei is seen as a relatively young and modern thinker within the Ukrainian military, with a focus on innovation and reform.
In contrast, the 60-year-old Syrsky was criticized for his adherence to Soviet-era military tactics. Drapei has pledged to work with full responsibility and respect for the soldiers fighting to defend the country.
In a Facebook post, Drapei praised Syrsky’s contributions to strengthening the Ukrainian military and expressed his commitment to building on his predecessor’s work.
President Zelensky’s Statement
In a video message posted on social media, President Zelensky thanked Syrsky for his service and praised his role in the successful defense of the capital, Kyiv, during the Russian invasion in 2022.
Zelensky also revealed that he had met with former Defense Minister Fedorov and offered him a new role within the government, although it is unclear whether Fedorov has accepted the offer.
Fedorov’s replacement, Yevheniy Khmara, a former high-ranking official in Ukraine’s security service, was appointed as acting defense minister last week.
President Zelensky has assured that all decisions will be formally implemented, marking a significant shift in the country’s military leadership.
