Nepal’s ruling party, the CPN-UML, has agreed to share power with the CPN at the provincial level, but the party is yet to decide who will lead the Koshi Province.
According to sources, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli is looking for an alternative to the current Chief Minister, Hikmat Kumar Karki, and has even held talks with the party’s parliamentary deputy leader, Tilakumar Menyangbo.
Party Infighting
The CPN-UML has been facing internal conflicts, with some leaders opposing Oli’s decision to replace Karki. The party’s general secretary, Shankar Pokharel, and deputy chairman, Vishnu Paudel, are reportedly against Oli’s move.
Karki, who was once a trusted aide of Oli, has been facing opposition from within the party. Sources say that Oli has been unhappy with Karki’s performance and is looking for a new leader to take charge of the province.
Menyangbo’s Chances
Menyangbo, who is currently the deputy leader of the CPN-UML’s parliamentary party in Koshi, is seen as a strong contender for the chief minister’s post. He has been a loyal supporter of Oli and has been instrumental in the party’s decision-making process.
If Menyangbo becomes the chief minister, he will be the 10th person to hold the post in Koshi Province. The province has seen nine governments since the provincial elections in 2017.
The CPN-UML’s decision to replace Karki has sparked controversy within the party, with some leaders opposing the move. However, Oli is determined to go ahead with his plan, sources say.
The party’s central committee is expected to meet soon to discuss the issue and make a final decision.
