Three Species of Waterbirds Found in Batuli Pokhari

Three species of waterbirds have been found in Batuli Pokhari, a pond in Chitwan, with a total of 440 nests identified.

According to Vasu Bidari, coordinator of the Nepal Bird Watching Association in Bagmati Province, the nests belong to three species of waterbirds: the lesser adjutant, the white-throated stork, and the greater adjutant.

Of the 440 nests found in Batuli Pokhari, 433 belong to the greater adjutant, while the remaining seven nests belong to the lesser adjutant and the white-throated stork.

Conservation Efforts

The discovery of the nests has confirmed Batuli Pokhari as an important breeding ground for the greater adjutant.

The pond is located in the Bharatpur Metropolitan City-13 and is part of the Barandabhar corridor, a protected area that includes Chitwan National Park and several other lakes.

The greater adjutant is known to nest in colonies, with multiple birds gathering in one area to raise their young.

According to Bidari, the birds have been nesting in Batuli Pokhari for the past four years.

Nepal is home to 902 species of birds, with 667 species found in Chitwan alone.
