Cardiff. The third one-day international match between India and England at Lord’s on Sunday may be Rohit Sharma’s last international match.
According to Indian media outlet Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee has informed Rohit that he is not in their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Although the board has not officially confirmed this, the selectors have told Rohit that they want to give opportunities to younger players like Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Rohit’s performance on the England tour has not been up to expectations. He has scored only 11 and 26 runs in the first two one-day internationals.
Despite his hard work on fitness, Rohit is reportedly unhappy with the decision and has discussed it with some BCCI officials during the England tour.
There are four main reasons behind Rohit’s possible retirement: Firstly, Rohit is now 39 years and 77 days old, and by the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, he will be over 40.
Secondly, the selection committee is now focused on building a new team for the 2027 ODI World Cup and wants to give opportunities to younger players like Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Thirdly, Rohit was removed as the ODI team captain last year and replaced by Shubman Gill, indicating that the selectors were looking towards the future.
Lastly, Rohit has already retired from two formats – T20 and Test cricket.
Rohit has led India to two ICC titles – the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
He has been successful as a captain, leading India to 103 wins in 142 matches across all formats.
