Six ministers from the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) have resigned from the Bagmati Province government. The ministers, who had been asked to step down multiple times, submitted their resignations to Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya.
The ministers, led by Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Forest, and Environment Madhusudan Paudel, had been instructed by their party leadership to resign. The party had been supporting the government but has now withdrawn its support.
The ministers had returned to Hetauda, the provincial capital, on Tuesday night after a five-day absence. They had been asked to resign twice before, on 32 Ashar and 2 Shrawan, but had been stopped by their party leadership.
However, after a meeting between CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Nepal Communist Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda on 5 Shrawan, the party instructed its ministers to resign. Minister Paudel stated that all the ministers had arrived in Hetauda and would submit their resignations on the same day.
Background
The Bagmati Province government has been a joint government of the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML since Shrawan 2081. Chief Minister Baniya has been leading the government since 20 Shrawan 2082, after the Nepali Congress’s Bahadur Singh Lama was ousted through a no-confidence motion.
Lama had been the chief minister since 9 Shrawan 2081. Baniya’s government has been facing a crisis after just one year in power, with the CPN-UML withdrawing its support.
According to the constitution, Chief Minister Baniya must now seek a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly within 30 days.
