Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has welcomed the government’s decision to scrap the 3% equalization tax on education and health, which was introduced in the current fiscal year.

In a social media post, President Thapa stated that his party had been raising concerns about the tax since its inception, citing it as an unsuitable policy. He emphasized that education and health are not luxury items, but necessities that many citizens cannot afford.

‘Not all citizens who use private hospitals and schools are affluent; for many, it’s not a luxury, but a necessity,’ he said. ‘The private sector is an integral part of the country’s education and health system, and adding extra charges or taxes will never solve the problem.’

President Thapa also expressed the need for the government to follow the necessary legal and administrative procedures to implement the decision to scrap the equalization tax.
