A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Nepal’s Surkhet district for allegedly harassing a woman while pretending to perform a religious ritual.
According to the District Police Office in Surkhet, Samir Thapa was taken into custody on Wednesday evening around 8:30 pm. Police said Thapa had introduced himself as a devotee of ‘Pathibhara Mata’.
The arrest came after a video of the incident, in which Thapa allegedly used abusive language and physically assaulted the woman while performing ‘Jharphuk’ and ‘Herai-Manai’ rituals, went viral on social media.
Following the incident, a nine-member police team led by Inspector Deepak Magarathi was deployed from the District Police Office in Surkhet. The team apprehended Thapa and initiated necessary legal proceedings.
The District Police Office in Surkhet said further investigation into the incident is underway.
