Nepal’s Supreme Court has ordered that sensitive cases, which are required to maintain confidentiality according to the law, should not be broadcast live.
The order, issued by a joint bench of judges Binod Sharma and Shantisinh Thapa, states that cases that require confidentiality, cases that need to be heard in a closed session, and cases where lawyers have requested confidentiality should not be broadcast live.
The court has also ordered that live broadcasts of court proceedings should not be edited, tampered with, or presented in a misleading manner.
The order comes after a writ petition was filed by advocate Jeevan Kumar Shahi, who objected to the practice of live broadcasting court proceedings in some cases.
The court has stated that this order will remain in effect until a policy or guidelines are formulated to regulate live broadcasts of court proceedings.
