A boy who lost both hands in an accident involving a live electrical wire in Nepal has been provided with compensation of over 1.5 million rupees by the Nepal Electricity Authority.
The authority’s board of directors approved the compensation, which includes medical expenses, under the provisions of the Accident Compensation Regulations, 2067.
The incident occurred when the boy came into contact with a live 11 kV transmission line while playing on the roof of a building in Triveni Municipality-2, Ghuseri, Nawalparasi.
The approved amount will be distributed to the victim’s family through the concerned distribution center.
The Nepal Electricity Authority has been providing compensation and medical expenses to victims of electrical accidents under the regulations.
According to the regulations, compensation of up to 200,000 rupees is decided by the department head, while amounts between 200,000 to 500,000 rupees are decided by the deputy executive director.
Amounts between 500,000 to 1 million rupees are decided by the chief administrative officer, and amounts above 1 million rupees are decided by the board of directors.
The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation has stated that the compensation was provided based on legal provisions and past precedents.
The ministry has also directed the authority to repair its structures, increase surveillance in high-risk areas, enhance safety precautions, and raise public awareness about electrical safety.
The ministry has emphasized that public awareness is crucial in reducing electrical accidents.
