Satlal Haluwai, a football enthusiast from Gaurigunj-6 in Jhapa, spent the entire night watching the World Cup. However, his excitement turned into a nightmare when he fell ill after the match.
Haluwai’s wife, Babita Das, rushed him to the local Gaurigunj Hospital, where doctors referred him to Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar due to breathing difficulties. The patient was taken to the hospital via the Hulaki Road, which is notorious for its poor condition.
According to Haluwai’s brother-in-law, Anchal Das, the patient’s condition was stable until they reached the Judi Khola bridge. However, the ambulance got stuck in a massive pothole, causing the oxygen pipe to disconnect. Despite efforts to reconnect the pipe, Haluwai’s condition deteriorated, and he passed away before reaching the hospital.
The family blames the poor condition of the Hulaki Road for Haluwai’s death. The 6-kilometer stretch from Ramchok to Hatkhola is in a deplorable state, with massive potholes that make it difficult for vehicles to pass. The ambulance driver, Vishwa Tajpuriya, said that it took around 20-22 minutes to cover the 6-kilometer distance, which normally takes 5-7 minutes.
Investigation and Controversy
The Hulaki Road project has been marred by controversy, with allegations of corruption and irregularities. The contractor, Shrestha Construction Company, had subcontracted the work to Abhishek Giri, a local businessman with a questionable reputation. Giri has been accused of threatening the contractor and stealing his property. The case is currently being investigated by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).
The delay in completing the road project has resulted in the loss of lives, including Haluwai’s. His family, including his wife and young children, are now left to mourn his untimely death.
The Hulaki Road project office has announced a new tender for the 6-kilometer stretch, but until then, the road will continue to be a death trap for commuters.
