Wild Elephant ‘Dhrube’ Under Close Surveillance

A wild elephant known as ‘Dhrube’ that has been responsible for the deaths of 25 people is now under close surveillance after its tusks were cut off and a radio collar was fitted.

According to the Chitwan National Park, the radio collar provides updates on the elephant’s location every 10 minutes.

Dhrube’s tusks were cut off by about six inches and it was also administered a hormone-controlling medicine to calm it down.

The elephant’s movements are being closely monitored, and if it enters a human settlement, the local community, consumer committee, and security personnel will be informed to take necessary action.

Dhrube has been responsible for a number of attacks on humans, including the death of a Nepali Army major in 2017.

Despite efforts to kill the elephant in the past, it has managed to evade capture and continues to roam the Chitwan National Park.

The park is home to around 45-50 wild elephants, and Dhrube is one of three male elephants that are responsible for the reproduction of the female elephants.
