US and Saudi Arabia Sign Nuclear Cooperation Deal

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear energy. The deal is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Washington and Riyadh.

The US Department of Energy described the agreement as ‘historic’, saying it would allow American companies to provide nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia. The agreement includes a ‘123 agreement’ under Section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 and a bilateral nuclear security agreement.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement that the agreements ‘reflect our shared commitment to strengthening our commercial relationship, promoting prosperity in both countries, and enhancing the security of our partners abroad’. He added that the agreements ‘meet the highest standards for nuclear safety and non-proliferation, and are based on the world’s best nuclear technology developed by American scientists and engineers’.

Concerns Over Uranium Enrichment

Some US media outlets have reported that the agreement would allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium domestically, rather than importing nuclear fuel from the US. However, the US Department of Energy’s public statement did not provide any details on uranium enrichment.

If confirmed, the agreement could face opposition in the US Congress. The Department of Energy has described the agreement as a ‘decades-long, multibillion-dollar partnership’ that would ‘strengthen global standards’. The agreement will now be submitted to Congress for review and approval.

Regional Tensions

The Trump administration has been seeking to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and has imposed sanctions on Tehran. Iran has denied any intention of developing nuclear weapons.

The US and Israel have launched military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in the past. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty does not prohibit uranium enrichment, but highly enriched uranium can be used to develop nuclear weapons.

Israel is believed to be the only country in the Middle East with a nuclear arsenal. The Trump administration has said that the agreement with Saudi Arabia would create jobs in the US, strengthen global non-proliferation standards, and enhance the strategic partnership with Riyadh.

The announcement comes as tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran continue to escalate. Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on US military bases and energy facilities in the Middle East in recent weeks.
