A high-ranking government official has been arrested at Biratnagar Airport with a large sum of cash. Mikmar Tamang, the chief of the Morang office of the Presidential Chure Tarai-Madhesh Conservation and Development Committee and an undersecretary of the Government of Nepal, was taken into custody on Ashar 3, 2083.
According to the police, Tamang was found carrying 6 lakh 65 thousand rupees in cash when he was arrested while boarding a Buddha Air flight from Biratnagar to Kathmandu. The police made the details of the arrest public on Friday.
The police found 515 one-thousand rupee notes and 300 five-hundred rupee notes in Tamang’s bag, totaling 6 lakh 65 thousand rupees. When Tamang was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the source of the money, the police took him into custody and handed him over to the Morang District Police Office.
Morang Police Chief SP Kavita Katwal said that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Tamang has been detained for further investigation as the police were unable to verify the source of the money found in his possession.
