In Kathmandu, there is a common perception that rock salt is healthier than white salt.
However, doctors say that the amount of salt consumed is more important than the type of salt. White salt is refined and iodized, and iodine is essential for thyroid function and brain development, especially for pregnant women and children.
Rock salt, on the other hand, does not contain iodine and has minimal amounts of natural minerals. Since rock salt is less salty, more of it is used for flavor, which can increase the overall sodium content in the body.
Doctors recommend using iodized white salt in moderation and avoiding excessive consumption of processed foods and pickled products that are high in salt.
