Rail Cargo Service from Kolkata to Biratnagar Begins

A new rail cargo service has been launched from Kolkata to Biratnagar, Nepal, aiming to make the transportation of goods from third countries easier and more affordable.

The service, which started on Ashar 1, 2083, is the result of continuous efforts and coordination by the Nepalese Consulate General in Kolkata.

The inaugural rail cargo service was flagged off by Nepalese Consul General Jhakku Prasad Acharya, officials from the Kolkata Customs, Kolkata Port, and the Indian Container Corporation Limited.

The first rail cargo service carried 40 high-capacity containers, each 40 feet long, loaded with raw materials imported from third countries for Swastik Oil Industries in Nepal.

The containers are equipped with an electronic cargo tracking system to ensure safe and secure transportation.

The Nepal-India Transport Agreement allows for the use of road, rail, and waterways for the import and export of goods from third countries.

Following the amendment of the Electronic Cargo Tracking System Regulations by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs of the Government of India, the Kolkata Customs issued a public notice to facilitate the transportation of goods by rail from Kolkata to Biratnagar.

The new rail cargo service is expected to reduce transportation costs and make it easier for importers and industries in Nepal to transport goods.

Compared to road transportation, rail cargo is considered safer, more reliable, and cost-effective, with a shorter transit time of around 24 hours from Kolkata to Biratnagar.

This new arrangement is expected to reduce delays, detention charges, and additional costs associated with road transportation, ultimately increasing the competitiveness of Nepalese industries.
