Proposed Election Commissioners to Face Parliamentary Hearing

A parliamentary hearing for the proposed Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners is scheduled for this coming Tuesday.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee Secretariat stated that the proposed election commissioners were previously asked to submit any complaints, but none have been received by Sunday.

The Constitutional Council meeting on July 4 had recommended Man Bahadur Karki, a registrar at the Supreme Court, as the Chief Election Commissioner. Karki had started his career as a government lawyer and later moved to the judicial administration after a group change in the judicial service.

On the same day, the Constitutional Council meeting had also recommended former DIG Dr. Rajiv Subba and retired Guru Wagley (Okhaldhunga) as election commissioners. Dr. Subba, an IT specialist who had worked in the Nepal Police, had retired as a DIG. Wagley, who was affiliated with the Madan Bhandari Technical University, is currently studying and teaching information technology. Wagley is a government lawyer (deputy attorney general) who had retired from the Election Commission.

Parliamentary Hearing

The three proposed commissioners were called for complaints by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee on July 8. The deadline for submitting complaints was set for Sunday. Since no complaints have been received, the Parliamentary Hearing Committee Secretariat has announced that the proposed election commissioners will face a hearing on Tuesday.

According to the constitutional provision, the proposed commissioners will be appointed to their respective positions after being approved by the parliamentary hearing committee.
