Nepal’s Postal Service Sees Notable Usage Despite Rise of Digital Communication

Despite the growing use of mobile phones, emails, and social media, the traditional postal service in Nepal’s Kailali district has seen a notable usage, with over 127,000 letters and postal items being imported and exported in the last fiscal year.

According to the Postal Directorate in Kailali, a total of 127,620 letters and postal items were imported and exported in the fiscal year 2082/83. The data shows that 63,810 postal items were exchanged through the postal directorate, with the majority being registered letters.

Information Officer Anish Tamang said that 52,699 registered letters were recorded, and 470 letters were imported and exported from abroad. The office also provides a 24-hour express mail service, known as 9EMS, which saw 2,723 items being exchanged throughout the year.

The Postal Directorate has also been regulating the communication sector, issuing licenses and permits to online media outlets, press representatives, and FM radio stations. In the last year, 21 online media outlets, 37 press representatives, and 15 FM radio stations were issued licenses and permits.

The directorate collected a revenue of Rs 64.31 lakh 903 through ticket sales and other sources. Postal Director Siddharaj Joshi said that despite limited resources and manpower, the postal service has been providing continuous service.

Joshi also mentioned that the government has a policy to improve and modernize the postal service, which is included in the 100-day work schedule. He expressed his confidence that with modernization and sufficient resources, the postal service can be made more efficient.
